Resetting Your Space

Resetting Your Space

My favorite room in the house to organize is the office/craft room. Just this month, I realized I had been holding on to too much stuff, including old paperwork, extra yarn, and fabric that I would never use. When I set up the room, I had assigned drawers and baskets for specific items, but I realized some spots weren’t working, especially in the cabinet, and I was trying to fit too many different things on one shelf. I pulled everything out, reorganized, and found two bags worth of things I could donate, which gave me more room to actually see what I have and use it! It was a great reminder that even after a room is organized, it doesn’t mean it never needs to be reorganized again.

Great Reminder

even after a space is organized, doesn’t mean it never needs to be reorganized again

Every so often, it’s helpful to reassess what I have, what I’m actually using, and whether my storage systems are really working for the space. Because this is a multipurpose room, I’ve found it can very easily become cluttered with unfinished projects, papers, and the dreaded “I’ll get to it later” pile. Although I’ve built a good habit of putting things in their place right away, there are still some months when I get busy, and instead of putting things where they belong, I pile them on the tables for another day. And this past month was definitely one of those times! But luckily, I already had systems in place, such as assigned storage and labels. Because the room had a foundation of organization, it took me much less time to clean up, everything already had a home, and all I had to do was put it there!

It feels amazing walking into a clean, organized room, and I definitely get more done working in a calm, tidy space. Even though I allowed the room to get messy, I didn’t let that discourage me. Instead, I used it as an opportunity to reassess which baskets and drawers weren’t working, where the furniture might fit better in the space, and what I could clean out and donate. In the end, I had a lot of fun rediscovering what I had and redesigning the space!
